Drinking Alone Beneath the Moon
A jug of wine among the flowers:
I drink alone, no friend nearby.
Raising my cup, I invite the moon
to join me, with my shadow — a party of three.
The moon does not know how to drink,
and my shadow only follows me around.
But for now the moon and shadow
shall be my companions.
Let me sing! The moon wanders to and fro.
Let me dance! My shadow tumbles and sways.
While still sober we delight in one another,
and after getting drunk we go our separate ways.
Let us pledge an eternal friendship,
and meet again upon the distant river of stars.
